Corrections of some species names from Dias et al. (2024)

The study “Phylogenetic analyses in the complex Neotropical subfamily Corydoradinae (Siluriformes: Callichthyidae) with a new classification based on morphological and molecular data” by Dias et al. 2024 recently published a long-awaited revision of the popular armoured catfishes.

In the now much more extensive genus Brochis, the first description or the genus in which the species was described was disregarded for two species: Thus, the species formerly labelled Corydoras britskii is now listed as follows: “Brochis britskii (Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1983)”, but ignoring the fact that the species was originally described in the genus Brochis and only later transferred to Corydoras. The correct spelling is therefore Brochis britskii Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1983. In this case, the brackets indicate whether the taxon has been described in the currently valid genus (if missing) or not (if present).

The reverse is true for the species given as “Brochis splendens Castelnau, 1855″. Here the brackets are missing, which according to nomenclature would mean that the species was already described as Brochis by Castelnau. However, B. splendens was described as Callichthys splendens and therefore the correct name is: Brochis splendens (Castelnau, 1855).

Among the species listed as Hoplisoma there are some incorrect endings in the species names. The species with the suffix -is must be adapted to the Latin neuter, resulting in the following corrected species names:

  • Hoplisoma acrense (Nijssen, 1972)
  • Hoplisoma araguaiaense (Sands, 1990)
  • Hoplisoma brevirostre (Fraser-Brunner, 1947)
  • Hoplisoma coppenamense (Nijssen, 1970)
  • Hoplisoma cruziense (Knaack, 2002)
  • Hoplisoma guianense (Nijssen, 1970)
  • Hoplisoma longipinne (Knaack, 2007)
  • Hoplisoma loretoense (Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1986)
  • Hoplisoma oiapoquense (Nijssen, 1972)
  • Hoplisoma potaroense (Myers, 1927)
  • Hoplisoma simile (Hieronimus, 1991)
  • Hoplisoma surinamense (Nijssen, 1970)
  • Hoplisoma xinguense (Nijssen, 1972)
  • and

  • Hoplisoma micracanthum (Regan, 1912)
  • Hoplisoma paleatum (Jenyns, 1842)

When compiling Table 7 for the species now in Hoplisoma, the authors forgot to include the following species:

  • Hoplisoma hypnos (Tencatt, Ohara, Sousa & Britto, 2022)
  • Hoplisoma psamathos (Tencatt, Ohara, Sousa & Britto, 2022)
  • Hoplisoma rikbaktsa (Lima & Britto, 2020)
  • Hoplisoma thanatos (Tencatt, Ohara, Sousa & Britto, 2022)
  • Corydoras orcesi Weitzman & Nijssen, 1970

The team of authors led by Angelica C. Dias is aware of the errors and is already working on correcting them. In order to prevent the “new names” from becoming incorrectly established, it is also important to communicate the corrected designations as quickly as possible.
